Are headers worth it on a 5.3 truck, and which should I buy?
Worth it as part of a combination; modest on a stock engine. Speedway's rough range is 5 to 20+ hp from headers (10–20 hp in its 4.8/5.3 bolt-on estimates), with bigger gains on modified engines. Bolting them on alone won't transform a stock truck.
Which type:
- Long tubes: the most power and best scavenging, but they need room and ground clearance for the collectors.
- Shorties: fit where long tubes don't and usually flow better than stock manifolds, but almost always make less power than long tubes.
We haven't verified truck-specific part numbers, so check each maker's application list for your cab, drive and emissions setup. On an EFI truck, a tune helps you get the full gain. More: how much power long tubes add.
Confidence: medium — sources disagree or are limited; check the sources below.
