At what point during an LS swap do vacuum brakes become inadequate and hydroboost becomes the better choice?
There isn't a single cutoff; it's about vacuum. Speedway's point is that big engine and cam combinations often don't make enough vacuum for standard power brakes. When the pedal feels hard or the booster can't keep up, that's the signal.
Hydroboost uses power steering pressure instead of vacuum. Speedway notes the CPP systems put out close to 1,800 psi at the wheel cylinders. Things to check:
- Length: the CPP units are about 22 in long, considerably longer than a typical dual-diaphragm booster, which can cause clearance issues.
- Mounting: CPP offers a 4-bolt version (3-3/8 in spread) for '62–'74 Chevelle/El Camino, '67–'69 Camaro and '68–'74 Nova, and a more universal 2-bolt version.
- They use a Corvette-style master cylinder and an adjustable proportioning valve.

What is the cheapest reliable way to convert a square body from vacuum brakes to hydroboost?
What we recommend
The cheapest route we've seen work is a salvage-yard donor square body hydroboost setup: the booster, master cylinder, pushrod and pedal, reported at around $55. Aftermarket kits run around $800 by comparison. Take all four pieces together from the same truck so everything matches. The catch with used boosters is that they're prone to leaks from age, so inspect or rebuild the one you pull before trusting it.
Check this first:
- Donor booster for leaks from age
- That you have the matching master cylinder, pushrod and pedal from the donor
Careful: This is the braking system, so bleed and test the brakes thoroughly before driving.
Check this first
- Verify your power steering pump puts out enough pressure/volume for hydroboost
- Check pedal rod geometry before final mounting
Try this, then this
- Pull a complete hydroboost setup from a donor truck — cheap and complete. Worked if: pedal feels right
How you know it's fixed
- Firm pedal, power assist working, no leaks
Still not fixed?
- Weak assist usually = pump can't keep up; upgrade the pump
