How to LS swap a C4 Corvette: parts list and steps

Two paths: a bolt-in kit for 1984–1991 cars, or fabrication.

Bolt-in (1984–1991): BRP Hot Rods' MuscleRods kit ($529) includes two CNC-machined motor mounts, an engine mount bolt kit and a C-beam bolt kit. It holds the engine at the factory tilt so driveline angles stay correct. To make it work:

  • an F-body style oil pan (the kit is designed around it);
  • a low-profile intake for C4 hood clearance;
  • a ZF 6-speed, T56 or 4L60E, which fit without transmission tunnel modifications (other transmissions may need adjustment).

BRP lists most Gen III/IV LS engines as compatible (LS1, LS2, LS3, 5.3, 6.0).

Fabricated (what Corvette Central did in a 1985 with an LS2 and 4L60E):

  1. Test-fit with a mock engine; cut the L98 engine mount stands flush and notch the firewall to clear the driver-side head.
  2. Trim the K-member for the LS A/C compressor.
  3. Fabricate engine mount pads and a transmission bracket; the 4L60E tail housing isn't compatible with the C4's C-beam, so it needs a custom bracket.
  4. Use C5 accessories to make a factory-style accessory drive fit.

Everything else: wiring and ECU, fuel system (LS EFI needs about 58 psi), cooling and exhaust. See the C4 swap page, the oil pan guide and the fuel calculator.
