How to LS swap a Ford Ranger: parts list and steps

2WD 1982–2012 Ranger with bolt-on mounts:

  1. Engine mounts: Oddball Motorsports' bolt-on LS mount kit ($369.99) has frame mounts that use factory frame holes and plates that bolt to the LS block with your factory LS mount hardware. The engine sits 1.25 in toward the passenger side for the stock or 8.8 rear end. 4x4 trucks are special order.
  2. Transmission: a 4L60E is a complete bolt-in with Oddball's transmission adapter. A 4L80E or other transmission will most likely need the crossmember moved back about 3 in.
  3. Crossmember: RicksRangerz lists raised transmission crossmembers from $79.99 (1983–1997) and from $324.99 (1998–2011), plus factory-replacement crossmembers.
  4. Headers: with Oddball's long-tube headers, clearance the passenger inner frame rail, and remove or heavily modify the factory airbox.
  5. Install tip (Oddball): leave the frame-side bolts loose until the engine is set on the mounts, then tighten.

Then wiring/ECU and tune, fuel system (about 58 psi — fuel calculator), cooling and driveshaft. See the Ranger swap page.
