LS swap computers & tuning tools

Your two big choices: which computer runs the engine, and which software tunes it.

Computer options

OptionTypeControlsTransmissionsNotes
Factory GM ECU/PCM (junkyard)factory ecuEngine + the electronic transmission it was paired withMatches donor (e.g., 4L60E/4L80E with Gen III truck PCMs)Cheap, often comes with a junkyard engine; needs a standalone harness (bought from ~$500, e.g., BP Automotive, Speartech, PSI, Howell, or built from the donor harness) plus tuning. DIY total can be ~$400 if you already own ECU/software (LSX Magazine). Each GM ECU is designed for a specific vehicle/engine/trans combo.

Factory PCM vs aftermarket EFI

Speedway's take: GM's factory computers are very reliable and handle big power; most trouble in OEM LS systems comes from sensors. Aftermarket EFI is less reliable than OEM but easier to get running and adds features the factory system lacks. The harness and sensors fail most often.

Tuning tools for the factory computer

HP Tuners

MPVI3 + credits

The MPVI3 interface does diagnostics and datalogging on its own. To tune, you buy credits and spend them to license each vehicle; HP Tuners' vehicle pages list how many a vehicle takes. Once spent, that vehicle stays licensed to the interface.

EFILive

FlashScan V3 + tuning option

Add a tuning option to the FlashScan V3 to flash calibrations for your application. Each tuning option comes with two VIN licenses, so it can tune two supported controllers.
