Can I put a 2006 6.0 (drive-by-wire) into my 2002 Tahoe that had a cable-throttle 5.3?
Here is what the documentation says. Each point links to its source; details depend on your exact computer, harness and transmission.
- 0411; 1998-2006: A drive-by-cable throttle body is actuated by a cable from the gas pedal; it requires a throttle position sensor (TPS) reporting exact position between idle and wide-open throttle and an idle air control (IAC) solenoid metering idle air, with both sensors mounted directly on the throttle body. (LSX Magazine (Power Automedia))
- 0411; LS1, LM7, LQ4; 1998-2006: Factory DBC throttle bodies appeared only on 1998-2002 LS1 Camaros and Firebirds, 1999-2002 pickups, 2003-2006 vans, and 2004 GTOs; the F-body and truck DBC bodies are universally interchangeable and share the same TPS and IAC. (LSX Magazine (Power Automedia))
- 0411, 242; 2002-2006: A 2006 DBW 6.0L (24x, 242 family) swapped into a 2002 cable-throttle truck can be converted to cable using a 411 PCM with IAC-driver hardware, a Gen III drive-by-cable harness, and a 78mm three-bolt cable body with TPS/IAC; alternatively retain DBW with a complete matched 2006 pedal, TAC, sub-harness, throttle body, and 242 PCM set. Confirm against the instructions for your exact parts before wiring. More: Throttle (drive-by-wire) in our tuning guide.
Yes, and the simplest way we've seen is to keep the 2002 5.3's cable-throttle intake and throttle body on the 6.0, since the 5.3 and 6.0 share injectors. Going drive-by-wire means adding the pedal, the TAC module and extra ECM wiring, which is more work for no real gain in a swap like this. Also check the crank reluctor: a Gen IV 58x engine needs a Lingenfelter 58x-to-24x converter box to run on a Gen III 24x harness.
Check this first:
- Check whether the 6.0 has a 24x or 58x crank reluctor
- Confirm the 5.3 cable intake and throttle body fit the 6.0 heads you have
Based on what we've seen work across our own builds, our friends' builds and the wider LS community, reviewed by our lead tuner (20 years of LS tuning). Every combination is different, so use at your own risk and check our safe tuning limits before any wide-open pass.
