How do you set up a 700R4 TV cable and converter lockup on a swapped truck?

Here is what the documentation says. Each point links to its source; details depend on your exact computer, harness and transmission.

  • TCI warns that incorrect TV-cable hookup can burn the 3-4 clutch pack in as little as 5 miles of driving. (LS1Tech)
  • TCI states the TV cable must be pulled fully out at wide-open throttle, and should already be pulled out 3/8 to 1/2 inch at idle. (LS1Tech)
  • TCI's 700R4/200-4R instructions stress the TV cable is not just a 'detent' cable: it controls line pressure, shift points, shift feel, part-throttle downshifts and detent downshifts, functioning like the combination vacuum-modulator/cable systems on other automatics. (Corvetteforum)
  • TCI states TH350 and older TH200 cables are designed differently and will not work as a 700R4/200-4R TV cable; with about 30 stock cable lengths in existence, a too-short cable will not work, and TCI's 376800 universal cable works in any 700R4/200-4R. (Corvetteforum)
  • Sources differ: f15
  • TCI's self-adjust procedure: engine off, press the adjuster tab, push the slider all the way in, release the tab, rotate the throttle to WOT and allow the audible clicks that self-adjust the cable. (Corvetteforum)
  • Per TCI, moderate-acceleration shifts should be about 1-2: 15-20 mph, 2-3: 25-30 mph and 3-4: 40-45 mph; a too-loose cable causes soft, stacked shifts and the instructions say to stop driving and readjust immediately. (Corvetteforum)
  • The same TCI instruction sheet secures the transmission-end cable sheath with a 10 mm bolt and lists bracket 376700 for Quadrajet/Carter AFB/Edelbrock Performer carbs; it also labels the Holley bracket as part 376800, which collides with the 376800 universal TV cable number used elsewhere in the same document, so the bracket number is flagged as a suspected typo. (Corvetteforum)

  • Bowler's Tru-Shift self-adjusting TV kit installs by bolting on the bracket, cam and cable and then running the throttle to WOT so the cable self-adjusts; no carb removal, pan drop or pressure gauge is required, and Bowler says it eliminates the number-one cause of premature 700R4 failure. (Bowler Transmissions)
  • Painless's 60109 lockup kit for TH700R4 has five circuits and an 11-foot harness, connects the brake switch to a 20-amp fused source, and includes a vacuum switch, fourth-gear pressure switch, brake switch, TCC solenoid, wiring harness, pan gasket and hardware; it works with carbureted or EFI engines and covers 1981-1993 units, while noting 1990-1993 non-electronic 4L60s use a round five-pin connector versus the kit's earlier square Weather Pack connector. (Painless Performance)
