Is the Aisin AR5 from a Colorado/Solstice a viable budget manual behind an LS, or is a used T56 better?

We don't have a verified torque rating for the AR5, so we can't compare it directly.

What our sources say about budget manuals behind an LS:

  • T5: Speedway found even stock, small-displacement LS engines make enough power for a T5 to be marginal.
  • Tremec TKX: rated 600 lb-ft, low-profile case that fits where old 4-speeds lived.
  • T56 / Magnum 6-speeds: strong, but in a C10 they needed tunnel surgery. Size is the usual issue in older chassis.

Whatever you pick, plan for an LS bellhousing, clutch, flywheel, hydraulic release and a new driveshaft.

What we recommend

Yes, the Aisin AR5 is a workable budget manual behind an LS if you drive it within its limits. What we've seen work is a junkyard 5.3 plus an AR5 (around $230 with a warranty), a ~$450 adapter such as the FABbot AR5 adapter kit ($419.95), an LS1 flywheel and an eBay clutch, which keeps the whole manual V8 swap under $2000. A used T56 usually runs $1500+ and can still be suspect. The AR5 has a deep 4.xx first gear and a 260 lb-ft factory torque rating, so it won't survive powershifting or dumping the clutch. If you want an off-the-shelf bolt-up, the T5 has plug-and-play adapters available.

Check this first:

  • Compare your engine's torque to the AR5's 260 lb-ft factory rating
  • Confirm the adapter kit fits your AR5 and flywheel

Careful: Powershifting or dumping the clutch will break an AR5 behind an LS.
