Should I physically swap a 58x reluctor to 24x, or use a converter box, to run a Gen IV engine on a Gen III PCM/harness?

Here is what the documentation says. Each point links to its source; details depend on your exact computer, harness and transmission.

  • LS2, LS3, LS7, L76, L77, L98: The Lingenfelter TRG-002 module lets a Gen IV GM V8 with a 58x crankshaft trigger wheel and 4x camshaft timing gear run in a vehicle wired for the 24x crank / 1x cam system without opening the engine. It is plug-and-play to the existing harness and factory sensors and has its own power source harness. (Lingenfelter Performance Engineering)
  • The TRG-002 only converts a 58x crankshaft signal to 24x; no module exists to convert 24x to 58x, so that direction requires physically changing the reluctors. The module does not work with front-wheel-drive LS applications. (Lingenfelter Performance Engineering)
  • TRG-002 status LED: red at power-up or with no crankshaft signal means the processor is booted and ready; green with the engine rotating means valid crankshaft and camshaft signals are present and the 24x crankshaft and cam-sync outputs are active. (Lingenfelter Performance Engineering)
  • Gen III PCM, E40, E38, E67; LS1, LS2, LS3, LS7, truck Gen III/IV V8; 1997-2013: Gen III ECUs pair with a 24x crankshaft reluctor wheel and a rear-of-intake, in-block cam position sensor. Gen IV engines use a 58x crankshaft wheel with a front-mounted cam position sensor and a 1x or 4x cam gear, except transition-year E40 applications which are 24x with the front-mounted cam sensor. (LSX Magazine)
  • Crank reluctor tooth count can be identified by the sensor color: 24-tooth wheels use a black crank sensor and 58-tooth wheels use a gray crank sensor. (LSX Magazine)
  • Gen III PCM (P01/P59); LS2, LS3, LS7: A Gen IV engine (LS2, LS3, LS7) can be run on a Gen III (LS1-style) controller if the 58x reluctor wheel is swapped for the Gen III 24x wheel and adapter harnesses are used for the cam position sensor and throttle body, because throttle body operation is reversed between the two generations; some sensors may also need replacement. (LSX Magazine)
  • LS3, LS7: Retailer application examples for the TRG-002 include installing a 2006-2009 Corvette LS7 or 2008-2009 Corvette LS3 engine into a 1997-2004 Corvette or 1998-2002 Camaro/Firebird on the original 24x vehicle electronics. (WS6store)
  • Sources differ: The SDParts TRG-002 instruction sheet lists the example fitment as 1997-2005 Corvette, while WS6store lists 1997-2004 Corvette.
