How do you disable AFM/DOD in the tune?

Turn off the deactivation function and its diagnostics — and what else depends on your hardware.

  • Stock (AFM) cam, AFM hardware left in: per LSX Magazine, the main change is turning off the cylinder-deactivation function and its related diagnostics. The AFM lifters and oil-control hardware stay in the engine; they just aren't commanded.
  • AFM hardware removed: the computer still has to be recalibrated so it stops commanding deactivation.
  • With an aftermarket cam: turning AFM off isn't enough. Idle airflow, fueling, spark, torque modeling and other drivability tables all need tuning.
  • Who does it: Jeff Smith's view is that paying a competent tuner is usually cheaper and easier than buying a tuning suite (HP Tuners, EFI Live) to do it yourself, unless you'll use the software again. Some swap-controller kits, such as PSI's Gen III DBW kit, ship with DOD disabled in the base tune.

Table names vary by computer and software. For the mechanical side, see what an AFM delete needs.
