What free or low-cost tuning tips should a beginner know before tuning an LS?
Free starting points (HP Academy):
- Bare Minimum Tuning Knowledge: 6 free video lessons.
- Free live webinars, including Introduction to EFI Tuning (about 50 minutes plus Q&A, no software needed) and a GM-focused Reflashing Using HP Tuners, which covers how the stock GM computer works, ignition and AFR changes, the HP Tuners scanner and reading datalogs. Registrants get recordings.
Core habits (HP Academy, LSX Magazine, PCM of NC):
- Use a wideband. Narrowbands only read accurately at stoichiometric; a wideband is needed to calibrate the whole range.
- Injector data first. The whole fuel model depends on it.
- Drivability before WOT. Tune idle, cruise and part throttle first; wide-open throttle last.
- Log properly. 15–20 minute logs covering cold start, idle, cruise, part throttle and WOT where safe.
