What is the best way to disable AFM on a 2017 Silverado?
There are two levels:
- Tune-only disable: the computer stops commanding cylinder deactivation. The AFM lifters and oil-control hardware stay in the engine. It's the cheapest option.
- Full mechanical delete: remove the heads, fit 16 non-AFM lifters, replace the AFM valley cover (VLOM) with a standard one, plug the AFM oil feeds, and usually fit a non-AFM cam with matching valve springs and pushrods — then tune. It's a much bigger job.
- Who does it: Jeff Smith's view is that paying a competent tuner is usually cheaper and easier than buying a tuning suite (HP Tuners, EFI Live) to do it yourself, unless you'll use the software again. Some swap-controller kits, such as PSI's Gen III DBW kit, ship with DOD disabled in the base tune.
We don't have a source that covers the 2017-specific computer, so ask your tuner whether they support it. More: what a full AFM delete needs.
