What is the right process for tuning a boosted truck, including VE tables, injector flow-rate scaling, and target AFRs?

A sequence from LSX Magazine and HP Tuners documentation:

  1. Let the computer read boost. Gen III computers can't read above 1 bar, so they need a 2- or 3-bar MAP sensor and a custom operating system (HP Tuners' 2.5-bar OS adds boost VE and boost-enrichment tables, speed density only). Gen IV (E38/E67) computers can read 2- or 3-bar sensors, but the MAP calibration still has to change. The sensor must match the OS setting, or fueling is badly wrong.
  2. Injector data. Enter the new injectors' flow, offsets and short-pulse data. Size them with duty-cycle headroom — LSX Magazine uses 80% as the maximum.
  3. Baseline VE. A custom OS starts with maximum VE values to guard against lean damage, and the engine won't start until real baseline values are transferred in.
  4. Boost fueling and timing: make sure enrichment covers boost at part throttle and low rpm. Pull timing anywhere that may see boost, then add it back on the dyno.
  5. Air-fuel targets: we don't have a sourced boost AFR target. Use your tuner's or ECU maker's guidance, verified with a wideband.
