What TCC lockup settings should you start with when tuning a 4L60E?
We don't have a published set of starting numbers, but here's what controls lockup, and one worked example.
What controls it (HP Tuners, GM computers):
- Apply/release speed tables exist for each mode: Normal, Cruise, Performance, Hot, 4WD Low, Tap Up/Down, and WOT. They're indexed by throttle position and gear.
- TCC Release TPS sets how much throttle unlocks the converter at a given speed and gear.
- Max/min TCC duty-cycle tables vary with line pressure and fluid temperature.
- TCC Lock During Shift keeps the converter locked through a shift. HP Tuners describes this as extremely hard on the transmission and converter clutch.
One example: on Jeff Smith's 4L60E El Camino (standalone controller), they set lockup above 50 mph in 4th gear only. With a loose converter, the rpm drop when the converter locked was bigger than the drop into 4th.
Wiring first: Speedway notes that 4L60E/4L80E swaps need a two-position brake switch for the converter clutch; wrong wiring can leave the converter unable to unlock. See transmission tuning.
