What tune changes are needed to remove the MAF sensor from the system?
- Force the MAF to fail. LSX Magazine's speed-density conversion set the MAF fail frequency to 0 Hz so the computer always treats the MAF as failed and fuels from the VE table. PCM of NC notes that on HP Tuners, a 0 or 1 in the MAF frequency fail-high diagnostic shows a car is set up this way.
- Stop the check-engine light. Reconfigure the MAF codes (P0101, P0102, P0103) so the deliberate "failure" doesn't set a code.
- Rebuild the VE table. In speed density, the VE table (airflow by rpm and MAP) becomes the key input to fueling, so it has to be recalibrated for the engine — LSX Magazine says from scratch after a conversion.
- Injector data first. The fuel math depends on correct injector flow and offsets, so enter those before tuning VE.
- Boosted early computers: stock 1999–2006 LS1-type computers can't read above 1 bar (about 105 kPa), so boost needs a 2- or 3-bar MAP sensor and a matching custom operating system. LSX Magazine points out that scaling the MAF for boost on early computers loses resolution, which is one reason to go speed density.
