Is it safe to drive on a base or startup tune?
A base tune is meant to get the engine started and running safely, not to be final.
- Before first start: LSX Magazine says to know exactly what programming is in the controller, because starting an unconfigured swap risks damage.
- What a base tune covers: for example, PSI's base tune for its Gen III drive-by-wire kit removes VATS, bypasses VVT where applicable and disables DOD. PSI states that any cam change, performance modification or component different from what was ordered needs a custom tune, to avoid a no-start, limp mode or no throttle response.
So: on the exact combination it was written for, drive gently while you datalog. With changes it wasn't written for, get it tuned before driving it hard. See the swap tune checklist.
