300ZX LS swap

The big decision in a 300ZX LS swap is where the engine sits: CX Racing and LOJ both sell bolt-in 300ZX kits, and the CX T56 kit is drawn around its own pan and headers.

LS Gen III/IV swap — moderate

Bolt-in kits put an LS in a 1990-1996 300ZX, and the oil pan, tunnel and fuel pump are what change between a naturally aspirated car, a twin-turbo and the transmission you keep.

Recommended engine: LS3, or a cable-throttle LS1 when the hood is tight. — compare LS engines & donors

Watch out for: The naturally aspirated fuel pump is not rated for a steady 58 psi with no vacuum reference. The twin-turbo pump is. The factory pump controller can stay and runs full speed once the factory computer is gone. A naturally aspirated 5-speed needs a starter spacer and a little bellhousing work. Flywheels use the twin-turbo ring gear, and a single-disc clutch from a 300ZX, 350Z, 370Z or G35 fits. The 2-seat wheelbase is 96.5 in and the 2+2 is 100.4 in. Some 2+2 cars need less than 1/2 in more room above the bellhousing. A 4L80E does not fit the tunnel without cutting it and removing the factory crossmember mounting points. A T56 uses the LS bellhousing with no adapter plate, and the factory 5/8 in clutch master will not fully release a T56 slave. A 4L60E uses the LS bellhousing and needs its own transmission mount. Keeping the factory 5-speed or a CD009 needs an adapter plate and flywheel. The hood latch may touch the throttle body on a left-hand-drive car. The speedometer needs a Dakota Digital SGI-5, and the factory tachometer can work with the startup tune.

Mounts & swap kits

2 options · $1,499.95–$1,680

Why you need it: The mounts set where the engine sits, and that decides oil pan, header and driveline fit. CX Racing and LOJ both sell bolt-in 300ZX kits, and the CX T56 kit is drawn around its own pan and headers. Both kits are left-hand drive, and the hood latch may touch the throttle body. The LOJ kit includes the mounts, the transmission mount and a baffled pan. The tunnel needs hammering, and the dash stays. More: engine mounts and swap kits.

Oil pan

1 option so far · $499

Why you need it: The pan has to clear the crossmember, the ground and, on a 4x4, the front differential. The rear sump clears the steering rack. A baffled pan with a 1/2 in flange is the shape these mounts were drawn around, and the same pan is sold on its own. More: oil pan guide.

1 option so far

Why you need it: The engine and headers have to clear the steering shaft and box, and some swaps need a new shaft or box to make room. The rack stays. Match the pump pressure to the Nissan rack. The bolt-in mount kit is left-hand drive because of the steering shaft, and the pan has to clear the rack. More: steering shaft and box clearance.

Brakes & booster

1 option so far

Why you need it: A big cam can leave too little vacuum for the booster, and some swaps leave no room for one. The stock booster stays and takes vacuum from the LS. The factory clutch master is 5/8 in and will not fully disengage a T56 slave, so the clutch hydraulics are a transmission part. More: vacuum booster or hydroboost?

Transmission adapter & clutch

4 options

Why you need it: An LS needs its own bellhousing or adapter and the right flexplate or flywheel, and an electronic transmission needs a computer to shift it. A T56 bolts to the LS bellhousing. A GTO shift linkage puts the shifter in the stock location. The tunnel needs hammering where it meets the bellhousing, and the dash stays. A 4L60E bolts to the LS and needs its own transmission mount. A 4L80E means cutting the tunnel and removing the factory crossmember mounting points. The factory 5-speed and a CD009 each need an adapter plate and a flywheel. A naturally aspirated 5-speed also needs a starter spacer. Some 2+2 cars need less than 1/2 in more room above the bellhousing. The stock-transmission adapter path moves the transmission rearward about 75 mm. More: transmission guide.

Crossmember

2 options

Why you need it: The transmission mount usually moves, and the crossmember sets the driveline angle. A T56 kit includes the transmission mount. Driveshaft

1 option so far

Why you need it: A different transmission is almost always a different length, so plan on a custom-length driveshaft. The 2-seat wheelbase is 96.5 in and the 2+2 is 100.4 in, so the 2+2 shaft is longer. Measure at ride height. The pinion flange can differ between cars. DecideA harness and computer that match your engine's crank signal (24x or 58x) and throttle (cable or drive-by-wire), and plan the tune, including VATS.

Harness & computer

2 options · $999

Why you need it: The computer and harness have to match the engine's crank signal (24x or 58x) and throttle (cable or drive-by-wire), and the tune has to turn VATS off. The stock GM computer is the path, with a harness matched to cable throttle or drive-by-wire. The factory tachometer and alternator light work with the startup tune. The speedometer needs a Dakota Digital SGI-5. Cable-throttle gauge adapters use S13 or S14 1-wire oil and coolant sensors. Drive-by-wire adapters use 300ZX 1-wire sensors. The drive-by-wire chassis line stops at 1995, so a 1996 car is outside that line. Order the harness for the transmission in the car. The factory EFI harness is replaced. The second harness behind the passenger headlight is transferred, and only the single in-car connector between the two can be kept. A 6L80 has a controller wiring option, and the mechanical fit in this tunnel is not confirmed. More: 24x vs 58x, and which harness.
